Saw an old friend for lunch today. We met each other in our late twenties and now we are in our fifties. We both vowed: No plastic surgery, no BOTOX. We committed ourselves to aging gracefully. Not an easy thing to do when every marketing piece screams: “Don’t fight age…defy it.” How utterly ridiculous.

I look in the mirror
And like what I see.
Gasp!
Good God, what’s happened to me?
All alluring models,
All sick-headed superstars,
Those with lucky genes,
Or skilled full-time surgeons,
All clicking cameras,
Popping flashes,
Red carpets,
White teeth that blind.
All spotlights on those
We deemed acceptable
On runway ramps
Bearing teenage vamps
Hard bodies
Slim fashion that did, in fact, kill.
All succeeded
Brick by brick, with criticism shrill
To build a castle [...]
